SW Trains at Waterloo

The problem

Since the 2nd January 2007, many London commuters, like those in Kingston and Surbiton, now have to endure extortionate increases to fares of a whopping 33%-36%, thanks to the Labour Government and the Mayor Ken Livingstone.

A peak return from Surbiton to Waterloo has risen from £6.80 to £9.20 and an off-peak return has risen, from £4.20 to £5.70.

I am appalled that this Labour Government continues in its efforts to make travel by train a luxury that few are able to afford. Many in my constituency commute into central London every day for work, whilst surviving on modest incomes.

With environmental disaster looming, the Government should be making public transport a more viable option for as many as possible, yet these sort of increases in train fares will drive many to return to their cars.

My action so far

In October last year, I tabled a parliamentary motion condemning the train increases arguing that it would hit commuters on modest incomes, especially those who work part-time, the hardest.  I also wrote to Ken Livingston asking for an explanation and twice to the Cabinet Minister responsible for transport, Douglas Alexander. However, neither Ken Livingstone nor Douglas Alexandrer replied.

Fares UnFAIR

I support Edward Davey's campaign against the unfair rail fare increases implemented on the 2nd January 2007. I agree that Ken Livingstone and the Secretary of State for Transport must hold an immediate review of these increases.
