Alfriston’s long standing problems must now be resolved

Local Lib Dem MP, Edward Davey, has written to the Conservative Leader of Kingston Council’s Administration to press for the long running problems with the new lease for Alfriston’s day centre to be resolved as a matter of urgency.

The new lease for Surbiton’s popular day centre was supposed to have been issued to the new management, Kaleidoscope, almost 11 months ago. However, due to problems with building maintenance, legal issues and officer turnover, a new lease still hasn’t been granted. This has meant that the elderly users have endured a number of maintenance problems such as broken toilets, whilst the building is not being used as fully as planned. It is understood that Kaleidoscope are keen to take over the running of Alfriston by April to coincide with their new grant.

Commenting on these delays, Edward Davey said,

"These long standing problems bring into question the Conservative Administration’s commitment to Alfriston day centre.

"The lease was supposed to be issued many months ago. Minimal effort appears to have been made by the Council to resolve the long standing maintenance problems and the elderly visitors and Kaleidoscope just don’t know where they stand.

"Given the previous attempts by the Conservatives to close Alfriston, this makes the current uncertainty over this lease even more unsettling.

"For the sake of all those involved, I hope Councillor Edwards now takes note of my letter and ensures that this matter is brought to a speedy and favourable conclusion."
