MP Backs Call to Tackle Crippling Disease

Local Lib Dem MP, Edward Davey, is backing a campaign in the Commons urging the Government to prioritise osteoporosis, a disease which is ‘crippling our nation.’

Edward Davey has backed a parliamentary motion supporting the National Osteoporosis Society in calling for osteoporosis sufferers to receive high quality standards of care. The motion also calls for specific measures to improve prospects for all osteoporosis patients, which include:

  • The inclusion of an osteoporosis assessment in Retirement Health Check
  • Explicit goals and treatment standards in a nation-wide framework for osteoporosis
  • Sufficient funding to deliver effective treatments to all who need them

Edward Davey said,

"Osteoporosis is a condition that affects many people in Kingston & Surbiton, and over three million people in Britain.

"I know from my own grandmother how debilitating osteoporosis can be. She is only now just recovering from her latest fracture, when she broke her hip.

"It’s such a widespread problem. 1 in 3 women will, at some time in their lives, suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis. Whilst older women are more at risk, osteoporosis is a condition which women of all ages need to be aware of.

"It does not have to be an inevitable part of growing. The reality is urgent action can and should be taken to prevent it.

"That is why I strongly support the National Osteoporosis Society’s campaign which is calling on the Government to include an osteoporosis assessment in the new Retirement Health Check. The earlier it is discovered, the better."
