EDWARD DAVEY GRILLS CHANCELLOR OVER KINGSTON HEALTH SPENDING

Local MP demands answers on health spending in Kingston

At Treasury questions in the House of Commons yesterday [Thursday 29th March] Edward Davey MP demanded to know from the Chancellor why his Government had, on average, spent less on the NHS than John did Major’s Government. As a proportion of national income, spending on the NHS is less even than under the previous Conservative Government, which left the NHS in such a dire state.

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Andrew Smith, tried to deny that the figures were accurate. However, it was pointed out to him that they were figures from his own Department.

Commenting on the NHS figures, Kingston and Surbiton's MP, Edward Davey, said:

"Kingston's Health Service was badly neglected by the Conservatives and needed real investment to pull things around.

"However, latest figures from the House of Commons library have shown that on average, this Government has invested even less than the previous Government, in the NHS.

"What people wanted was better health care and that needed extra investment.

Labour’s decision to stick to Tory spending plans for the first two years of this Parliament - regardless of economic circumstances - has now been shown to be an ill-judged one."
