Edward
Davey joins Kingston Lollipop campaign in Road Safety
Week
Local Liberal Democrat MP
Edward Davey spent an afternoon this week as a lollipop
man directing Chessington schoolchildren across the road.
He was given his instructions by Sheila, Buckland
Infants' lollipop lady, and Brian Spratt, who is leading
Kingston's push for more lollipop ladies.
The event was arranged as part of 'National Road Safety
Week' and also acted as a recruitment drive to fill
spaces outside Kingston's schools that are currently
without lollipop staff.
Mr Davey is personally aware of the importance of the
work that lollipop men and women do after he suffered a
serious road accident when he was young.
Mr Davey said:
"I was
delighted to be able to support Road Safety Week - it's
vital that we put the interests of child safety to and
from school high on the agenda. If we can make it safer
to walk to school, more parents and children will leave
the car at home, thereby making it safer still. A
virtuous circle.
"I know how important a school lollipop warden can
be. When I was six I was hit by a car outside my
school. Usually there would have been a lollipop
lady guiding the kids but she was off on that particular
week. Although I
spent a few days in hospital, it could have been a lot
more serious if my swimming kit hadn't cushioned the
impact of my head on the road.
"Kingston and Surbiton's lollipop men and women do a
fantastic job in guiding our kids safely across the road,
but we need more people to come forward. So I would urge
anyone who wants to earn a bit extra and wants to
contribute to the community to come forward. Please
contact BRIAN SPRATT on 020-8547 5992 for more
details."
