Improvements for Alfriston - at last

The Conservative Cabinet have bowed to pressure from the Lib Dem team and carried out much needed works at Alfriston Day Centre following two years of delays and neglect.

The improvements have only come after the centre manager Diane Double at a meeting of Kingston’s Cabinet on 13th March publicly challenged the Conservative Administration over their failings. Local MP, Edward Davey, also wrote to the Conservative Administration expressing his concerns over the lack of action and demanded that the maintenance problems and lease delays be resolved.

Over the last two years the Conservative Administration had failed to carry out the much-needed works to the buildings facilities. Furthermore they had not managed to transfer the lease over to Kaleidoscope who stepped to save the centre when the Tories first tried to close it down.

Edward Davey said,

"I am pleased this complete mess has finally been resolved."

"Only after concerted efforts by the Lib Dem team have the Council faced up to their responsibilities. The Conservative Administration had been dragging their heels for too long and the elderly and vulnerable users have suffered."

"I am sure users will be delighted that the centre is now in proper working order and the concerns over the lease will shortly be resolved."

"By their actions, one must question the Conservatives’ commitment to supporting facilities for the elderly in the Borough."

Welcoming the work, Cllr Chrissie Hitchcock who accompanied Diane Double to the meeting at which the matter was raised, said,

"I am delighted that the long over due work at the centre is finally being done and that the lease is nearer to being transferred. The Conservative Administration dragged their feet on this for too long and only backed down following intense pressure.

"Kaleidoscope has been excellent in their dedication and support of Alfriston. On my recent visit to the centre you could not help but be impressed by the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere they have maintained, it is just a shame it has taken Kingston's Conservative Administration two years to live up to their end of the bargain."
