"Bass's
plans are unsuitable." - Davey

MP blocks leisure giants plans for Chessington leisure
complex
Tolworth &
Chessington's MP, Edward Davey has produced a submission
for the next planning committee opposing Bass
Development's proposals for a huge cinema, bowls and
leisure development encompassing the Toby jug and
neighbouring MAFF sites.
The land had previously been identified in the Borough's
Unitary Development Plan for residential housing and
community facilities.
In his letter to the Council's Chief Planning Officer,
Edward argued for the urgent need to provide affordable
housing in the Borough.
Commenting on the plans, Edward said,
"It is clear
that this proposals does not meet the Borough's
guidelines. Unfortunately, this big leisure giant thinks
it can throw its weight about to get what it wants."
"I am particularly concerned about the traffic
implications. Hundreds of extra cars will be coming
directly to the Tolworth roundabout and the slip road.
Unlike previous proposals for a swimming pool on nearby
council land, this plan has few community benefits and
will cause more congestion."
"We must stand up to this company and support local
residents who clearly oppose these plans. They are
completely out of character with the surrounding area. As
a result, I feel that I must support them in taking on
this giant."
"Hopefully, my submission will encourage the
planning committee to see sense and they will be minded
to refuse this unsuitable application."
