MP calls for ministerial review of Kingston’s CCTV bids

Edward Davey pursues local resident’s suggestion of using webcams as a possible solution in the fight against crime

Tolworth’s Lib Dem MP, Edward Davey, has written to Jack Straw to press for a review of the Home Office’s decision to reject 2 of the Council’s 3 bids for new CCTV equipment.

Kingston Council recently made bids for new cameras for Tolworth Broadway, for the Alpha Road Estate and for a link between the Council’s and SWT’s CCTV control rooms.

Edward Davey wrote to the Home Secretary to support the Council’s bid and to highlight the hard work put in to the projects and the potential benefits they would bring to local communities. Unfortunately, only the CCTV control room link up between the Council and SWT is to be allowed to proceed to the next stage of the bidding process.

Edward Davey said,

"I am very disappointed for everyone who has put so much time and effort into trying to make these bids work."

"Home Office officials have made an obvious mistake in refusing these bids and the Minister should reconsider these proposals."

Undeterred by the Government’s rejection of two of the three bids, Edward Davey has also written to the Council to promote a local resident’s suggestion that webcams could be used as a temporary measure.

He added

"All may not be lost. I will be pursing a local resident’s suggestion that webcams could be used as an interim measure.

"I understand this technology has the potential to be used as a crime-fighting tool and its use is seriously being considered in a neighbouring Borough."
