Edward Davey, Lib Dem MP for Kingston and Surbiton, has welcomed the announcement that a local day centre for the elderly, the Milaap Centre in New Malden, has been awarded a lottery grant, following hard work by local Lib Dem campaigner, Lally Malik.

The Community Fund, which distributes lottery money, has accepted the application prepared by Lally Malik and awarded the Milaap Centre over £110,000.

Edward Davey said: "This is excellent news for the Centre which provides a great service for our community. I am delighted hard work has paid off and that the Centre will benefit from this investment."

Lally Malik was also delighted by the news. She said: "With this extra money, we can open the Centre for the whole week and not just three days.

"The Milaap Centre has been doing fantastic things and this money will enable even more. The lottery funding will pay for a full-time Centre Co-ordinator and a part time minibus driver, plus help us with the costs of rent, training, information, running costs and equipment.

"I am delighted that the work of Lally and her team has been recognised in this way,"
said Mr.Davey, "and thrilled that the future of the Centre is looking even brighter than before."

"I would like to thank everyone who helped me with my work at the Milaap Centre - it really is a pleasure to be able to help the local community in this way,"
said Lally Malik. "The funding I managed to secure is an immense help and I'm looking forward to the work continuing and the Milaap Centre going from strength to strength."
