Davey slams cash machine charges

Edward Davey, Lib Dem MP for Kingston & Surbiton, is calling for a rethink on cash machine charges at new Post Office machines.
4,000 cash machines are being installed at UK Post Offices by the end of this year, of which 800 will charges fees for cash withdrawals. Mr.Davey has signed an Early Day Motion calling for the proposals to be urgently reviewed.
"As usual, the people who can least afford it will be hit hardest," said Mr Davey. "The banks say they have to charge a 'convenience fee' in areas with fewer customers - these are exactly the people who need services like this most and who will have no choice but to pay the charge."
"Post Offices are vital centres of our communities and as such the extra facility of a cash machine is very welcome. But what some of the banks involved in this scheme are doing is create an unfair system with discrimination against people in less busy areas."
"The banks say that it is a 'convenience fee' and that customers have a choice, but it is clear that they are taking advantage. The fee applies in places where customers will have no alternative - where there is competition from other banks, the machines will be free."
