Kingston & Surbiton MP Edward Davey has contributed a key chapter to The Orange Book, a collection of essays by leading Liberal Democrat MPs and prospective MPs on traditional Liberal principles and how they apply to modern day policy.
Launched today, the publication is sub-titled 'Reclaiming Liberalism'. It applies the four traditional strands of Liberalism - political, economic, social and personal - to a wide variety of policy issues, showing that today they are as relevant as ever.
Edward Davey's chapter 'Localism and Liberalism' calls for a re-birth of local democracy, local accountability and local innovation. Other contributors to the book include Susan Kramer, prospective parliamentary candidate for Richmond Park, and Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesman and MP for Twickenham.
Commenting, Edward Davey MP who is Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister as well as a dedicated constituency MP, said
"At a time when the Party's political star is rising once again, it is vital that we show we have the capacity to generate new ideas and to keep the dialogue within and about the party fresh and exciting.
"This book challenges the fragmenting two-party political system and secures the Liberal Democrat position at the forefront of the political debate."
Leader of the Liberal Democrats Charles Kennedy commented:
'I welcome this book. New and creative political thinking is the sign of a self-confident political party which is not afraid to look anew at the challenges facing Britain.'
'The Orange Book' is edited by Paul Marshall and David Laws MP, and is out on 2 September published by Profile Books. It can be obtained from the Liberal Democrat bookshop.
