Local MP announces results of Fairtrade Christmas Card Competition
5.12.04
This weekend local Liberal Democrat MP Edward Davey announced the results of his recent Christmas card competition. The annual competition, open to 4-15 year olds from across his constituency of Kingston and Surbiton, was won by 10-year-old Josephine Walker of Christ Church, Church of England Primary School.
Josephine’s eye-catching design that encapsulated the spirit of a Fairtrade Christmas will be made into Edward Davey’s official Christmas card and distributed to the thousands of people on the MP’s Christmas card list. A special prize-giving ceremony was held at 2 pm on Saturday 4th December at Café Chaud on Platform One of Surbiton Station.
Edward Davey MP, who will be writing to every one of the nearly 600 entrants, said,
“I am thrilled with Josephine’s card. It is striking and highly appropriate to the rather challenging theme of a Fairtrade Christmas.
“We chose Fairtrade as it is such an important issue locally. Kingston is working towards becoming a Fairtrade Borough, promoting Fairtrade through council activities and in the community.
“This year we had around six hundred entries from schools all over the constituency, with some excellent designs. The quality of entry was extremely high, as it is every year, and there are prizes and Highly Commended certificates that have been awarded to children in each of the three age groups.
“However, Josephine’s card really stood out. It will make a wonderful Christmas card and raise the theme of Fairtrade with all those who receive it!
“I look forward to welcoming Josephine and her parents to the House of Commons, where they will be joining me for tea on the Terrace as part of her prize.”
