16.10.2000 "Safer Stations Campaign delivering results but more still yet to come" - Davey Local Liberal Democrat MP, Edward Davey, has welcomed the news that thanks to the efforts of his safer stations campaign group, the Borough leads the way in the whole of the South West Trains area with 20% of all officially accredited safer stations. The accredited stations, Surbiton and Kingston, are to be followed by six other stations which are set for improvements as a result of the groups efforts. The next meeting of the group is set to be the most successful ever. Having undertaking a safety audit with officers from the British Transport Police and SWT along all the Chessington branch line stations, Mr Davey has had it confirmed that all the resulting safety improvement proposals have either been implemented or are scheduled for attention. "I am pleased the Borough has the highest percentage of accredited stations in the SWT area. This is a clear indication of the success of the efforts of the Safer Stations Working Party. "It is also with great pleasure that the stations along the Chessington branch line are finally going to brought up to scratch. After Kingston University undertook an in-depth study of the users concerns, many of them will now be addressed. "South West Trains have made real progress in addressing identified weaknesses. Any improvements still outstanding will be flagged with the Strategic Rail Authority to include in the contract for the three remaining train companies bidding to run services in our area, in the future. "I must thank all of those on the group for the hard work they have put in. They should be proud with their efforts and the results they have achieved. The travelling public should gradually begin to see the benefits of their work." |
