Police campaign

Edward Davey with police car

Great efforts by local police are paying off.

So too are our campaigns to support them. There’s more to do, but we should celebrate good news.

Look at the successes

  • Excellent detective work by Kingston officers recently led to arrests and convictions of two serial rapists.
  • Efforts to reduce street robbery are working, using new business partnerships and CCTV evidence.
  • Special truancy and late night patrols helped officers arrest thirteen of the graffiti vandals who so disfigure our community.
  • Recent police action prevented yet more problems with trespassing travellers, who this time were moved on without delay.
  • The police’s Dog Handling Section in south London will be based at New Malden police station.
  • The Government’s decision to restore the police’s London housing allowance, abolished by the Conservatives, is also good.

So what’s the bad news?

Put simply, crime and anti-social behaviour haven’t gone away – far from it.

Despite successes, crime in the Borough rose last year.

I am still convinced we need more police in Kingston - to provide the level of protection people want and rightly expect.

When I spoke about police in Commons debates last year, I urged Jack Straw to back forces like Kingston’s, with extra officers and cash.

This police campaign will continue till we win.
