Rubbish
Britain produces too much. Kingston residents alone produce 74,000 tonnes each year.
That means we're wasting the world's resources, and costing ourselves money in the process. The costs of burying rubbish in landfill is shooting up and landfill sites are scarce.
Britain's performance in reducing waste and recycling is appalling. While the Netherlands and Germany were recycling 38% of their municipal waste in 1996, the UK only manages around 10% now. Comparing a long list of countries, the OECD said that in the UK "measures to encourage waste minimisation remain very weak."
Here in Kingston we need to do more. The Council thinks we need to double the amount we recycle and compost in the next 3 years.
That's why the major consultation launched by Kingston Council - "Rethink Rubbish" - is important: the Council wants our views on how best our Borough can cut its waste.
You should have received a survey through your door. It sets out a three-pronged strategy: reduce, re-use and recycle.
If we can reduce the amount of rubbish we create in the first place, re-use some of what we've thrown away before and recycle much of what's left, Kingston can save money and help save our planet too.
If you've not received a survey, you can 'phone 020 8547 5929 for a copy or complete the survey online at www.kingston.gov.uk .
