MP backs residents over Day's Waste Management proposals for Tolworth

Chessington & Tolworth's MP, Edward Davey today announced that he will be opposing the plans by Day Waste Management for a waste plant close to the Tolworth roundabout.

The plans for a waste management plant which include the collection and compacting of waste on site and then being transported out of Tolworth, are due to be discussed at the next planning meeting on 2 Feb 2000.

Commenting on the proposals, Edward Davey said,
"Why should Tolworth become the rubbish yard for Elmbridge and Epsom Boroughs?"

"It is impossible to see how a rubbish yard can sit happily so close to a residential area. The noise and smells that will be generated by a waste disposal site are completely out of keeping with the character of the surrounding area."

"Although the Conservatives designated the site many years ago as a possible 'Site to be retained for the transhipment of aggregates and waste', things have changed. Given the large number of new residential properties built since this land was given this designation, these plans no longer appear to be appropriate."

"The planning authorities should update the UDP to stop this plan - now and for ever. Once the old MAFF site has housing on it, the idea of a waste transfer site will look even more ludicrous."

"On this basis, I strongly believe that the waste transfer site plan must be rejected. Councillors should also use this opportunity to send out a message to other potential developers of this type - This Borough is not prepared to become our neighbours dumping ground."
