Kingston Care Home survey reveals local crisis
22.5.02
Half of Kingston's care home beds could be under threat, according to the results of a survey carried out by local MP Edward Davey in a joint campaign with Kingston Council's new Lib Dem Executive Member for Health and Community, Cllr Rolson Davies.
Edward Davey fears national Government policy is not addressing the problems uncovered in the recent survey of local care homes. Commenting, he said:
"Many local care homes have already closed. This new survey shows many more could go soon if no action is taken.
"This effects everyone, as the beds in these care homes are vital to the smooth running of our local NHS.
"The Government's approach is too much stick and not enough carrot. Their much publicised 'Bed Blocking Initiative' seems to be more spin than substance, involving only one local care home.
"The Government's latest plans to fine Councils who don't find beds in the community will just leave Kingston with less money to help the elderly and totally ignores the severity of the problem. I will continue to raise this issue with Ministers till we get some action."
