Davey joins green energy campaign

Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston & Surbiton, is today publicly giving his backing to a global campaign to bring green energy to two billion of the planet's poorest people.

Mr.Davey is visiting the Body Shop in Kingston to pledge his support to the 'Choose Positive Energy' campaign led by The Body Shop and Greenpeace. The initiative is currently running in The Body Shop stores across 27 countries.

"The 'Choose Positive Energy' campaign calls for world leaders to commit to the delivery of renewable energy to the developing world," explained Mr.Davey. "There are two billion people on this planet who have no access to electricity at the moment and it is vital that we ensure this essential access is achieved through renewable sources."

Mr.Davey is today meeting staff at The Body Shop in Kingston to highlight the campaign, which was kicked off by an Early Day Motion calling for world leaders to commit to provide electricity from renewable energy sources at the 2002World Summit on Sustainable Development.

"Access to renewable energy must be increased worldwide, and targets for its usage must be more ambitious," said Mr.Davey. "But the problems we already face with fossil fuel usage will be vastly exacerbated if we fail to take this step to ensure that global warming doesn't get even worse - simply by taking the opportunity to make renewable energy the norm from the start."
