Local MP leads celebration at St.Mary's, Chessington
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, this Monday performed the official opening ceremony of the newly improved nursery at St.Mary's school, Chessington.
An investment of over £55,000 has dramatically improved the nursery facilities at St.Mary's, first opened back in 1976. The improvements have seen an expansion in the space available, new toilet and kitchen facilities, improved storage area and a covered play area outside.
The improvements were funded by LEA Controlled Voluntary Aided Funding, a scheme whereby the school's governors raised 10% of the cash whilst Kingston LEA provided the rest.
St.Mary's school nursery is very popular with local parents, accepting children from the age of 3 and takes 26 children in the morning session and a different 26 in the afternoon.
Commenting, Mr.Davey said:
"I am delighted to see these new nursery facilities - it's a great improvement.
"A big "Thank You" must go to all those involved in making the project happen. The children all seemed very happy with their new nursery and I know the teachers are - especially Mrs. Maragh who has been teaching at the nursery for over 20 years.
"Our little ceremony disturbed a very interesting lesson on fruit, and we were entertained afterwards by a delightful rendition of "Twinkle, twinkle little star" - with hand movements, of course.
"Giving children the best possible start in life must include good nursery facilities available for all children whose parents want them. This is an investment that reaps huge dividends for children and society alike."
