Local MP tackles anti-social firework use
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, is calling for tougher controls on the sales and use of fireworks. Responding to local residents concerns about the excessive noise and possible dangers that fireworks cause, Edward Davey is urging the government to take measures against the inconsiderate and excessive use of fireworks.
The Government has proposed a voluntary code, but Edward Davey does not believe this goes far enough towards solving the problems faced by many local residents who have raised the issue with their local MP.
Commenting, Edward Davey said:
"Everyone recognises fireworks play a central part in celebrations around 5th November. However, nowadays the fireworks season seems to go on for weeks. This can keep people awake and frighten pets.
"The Government talks about tackling anti-social behaviour but so far has done little to deal with the anti-social use of fireworks. There is a balance to strike between allowing people to enjoy fireworks and preventing them being a nuisance.
"Some fireworks have become so loud that they are actually dangerous. The sale of so-called air bombs should be severely restricted at least.
"Local authorities should be given powers to limit the selling period for fireworks to a few weeks before 5th November but retaining local discretion to permit further sales for other festivals and celebrations such as Diwali and major national events. Government must give the local council the necessary powers, funding and guidance to deal with antisocial use of fireworks."
