"Appalling
tragedy must not stop our work"
Edward Davey MP promises business as
usual in the wake of Cheltenham sword attack.
Local MP Edward Davey has sent his condolences to the
family of Andrew Pennington, the caseworker for fellow
Lib Dem MP Nigel Jones, murdered last week during the
MP's advice session.
Mr Davey is undertaking a review of security precautions
in the wake of the attack but has vowed not to let the
incident make him less accessible to local residents.
Edward Davey said,
"This tragedy
has hit us all very hard and many local Liberal Democrats
who knew him will miss him terribly. My heart goes out to
his family at this exceptionally difficult time."
He added:
"MPs cannot surround themselves with security if
they are to be accessible and represent local residents.
It will be business as usual for me. Nonetheless, I will
be discussing with colleagues the best way to protect my
staff."
"Members of Parliament are no different from many
public and private sector staff whether its nurses,
teachers, social workers or post office sub
masters."
"The challenge for us all is to reduce violence and
crime throughout society. MPs are not a special
case."
