Davey speaks in Commons in support of Kingston's "BID"
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, spoke in the Commons on Tuesday backing ideas which could see a drastic improvement in Kingston's town centre.
In the 2nd Reading of the Local Government Bill, Mr.Davey highlighted new proposals for Business Improvement Districts (BIDs). This is a proposal where local businesses can collectively fund improvements to their local environment. Examples of how the money can be spent include tackling graffiti, better street furniture and increased CCTV - just about anything which enhances the experience of residents of, and visitors to, Kingston's town centre.
Kingston is hoping to become one of the first towns to take advantage of the legislation as soon as it is passed - there is already a timetable for consultation - and Mr.Davey was keen to support the idea officially on the floor of the House of Commons at the first opportunity.
Mr.Davey commented:
"The idea of Business Improvement Districts comes from America where it has helped regenerate and revive many town centres. We can be proud that Kingston looks like being the pilot for London, leading the way.
"Already the London Development Agency is providing cash for local businesses to develop ideas for improving Kingston town centre. We are now only weeks away from the formal launch of those ideas. They will focus on cleaning up the town's streets, removing chewing gum, improving safety and security and sprucing up Kingston's centre generally.
"If local businesses vote to support a BID, the difference to Kingston town centre could be immense. The local business community working in partnership would not just provide the cash but choose their priorities with the council.
"I hope we will find strong support for the scheme from town centre businesses. A BID for Kingston Town Centre will give businesses a real say in how services are run to ensure that it retains and builds upon its position, as second only to the West End in London and the South East."
