Local MPs sign EDM 92 in support of fireworks control
New controls on the sale and use of fireworks have been backed in the Commons by Kingston's 2 Liberal Democrat MP,s. They have signed a Commons Early Day Motion calling for the proper licensing of firework retailers and display organisers, and for limits to be placed on the times of the year during which fireworks can be bought by the public, and the times of the day during which they can be used.
The MP for Kingston and Surbiton and the MP for Richmond have both given their full support to the campaign by The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association to increase controls on the sale and use of fireworks. It is a campaign supported by an increasingly broad range of people and organisations who do not want to ruin anyone's celebrations, but do not want to see people's lives ruined either.
The Early Day Motion notes the cost, in human and financial terms, incurred as a result of the premature retirement, sedation, or retraining of guide dogs which have been traumatised by fireworks as well as the increase in firework-related injuries.
Edward Davey commented
"Increasing misuse of fireworks is causing serious injury and real aggravation to many people.
"Many of my constituents also have expressed their concern over the misuse of fireworks and asked me to support this Early Day Motion. I am particularly concerned for some of the older members of the community who have a genuine fear about the threat posed by the current poor licensing of firework retailers.
"The effect on animals, especially guide dogs, is often overlooked, but has become such a problem that the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association have rightly developed this new campaign. I am delighted to support it.
