At a meeting at the Market Hall, Kingston last week, Edward Davey MP was re-selected to stand for the Liberal Democrats in the Kingston and Surbiton constituency in the forthcoming General Election, expected in May next year. While this is unlikely to be a huge surprise, the Liberal Democrats believe party democracy is crucial. Mr Davey received a unanimous vote.
Edward was joined by Malcolm Bruce, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, and Theresa McCahill, Chair of Kingston Liberal Democrats, at the packed meeting.
Edward Davey, who has held the seat since the 1997 election, said
"I'm honoured my party has selected me to stand for the Liberal Democrats in Kingston and Surbiton. Together, the party has worked hard for people in the Royal Borough, and as a team we have delivered some real improvements in local services. I'm delighted we have remained so united, as this extremely generous vote shows."
Malcolm Bruce MP commented,
"Edward's result at the last election stunned people across the country, but I know it was richly deserved. I've been a MP since 1983 and I've yet to see anyone work harder than Edward for his local constituents. What amazes me is that he has managed to combine his heavy constituency work with an increasingly important role on our frontbench: he is arguably the party's fastest rising star.
"I've worked closely with Edward for many years as a friend and colleague and admire his energy, enthusiasm and intelligence. With the backing of his constituents, I have no doubt he will be a major player in the Liberal Democrats' advance to Government."
Theresa McCahill, Chair of the Kingston and Surbiton Liberal Democrat group, commented
"Edward Davey has received a terrific endorsement from local Party members. He's worked so hard, and many more people have joined the local party because of his high reputation."
