The design plans for new buildings and a major refurbishment at Malden Manor Primary School were praised this week by local Lib Dem MP, Edward Davey, following a recent visit to the school.

Malden Manor Primary School is to benefit from one of the largest investment programmes ever seen in a Kingston primary school in recent years. Over £3.5 million will be invested in a new block for nursery and reception classes, a new library, a new sports hall and a major modernisation of existing classrooms.

On his recent visit, Edward Davey was shown the detailed plans by Headteacher, Mrs Matthews, and given a tour of the school. Kingston and Surbiton's MP heard that local residents have been consulted and the council is to consider the plans shortly. If the official go-ahead is given, building work is expected to start by Easter next year.

Commenting after his visit, Edward Davey said:

"I remember my first meeting with Mrs Matthews at Malden Manor several years ago. Then she shared with me her worries about the crumbling buildings, the inadequate space and the poor quality of the old nursery block.

"So I was delighted to see how the constant campaigning for more cash for schools is at last paying off with this huge boost to Malden Manor.

"The new plans will transform this community school and ensure that the excellent teaching can be complimented by excellent facilities.

"The challenge now is to help the other schools in the Borough with sub-standard buildings to win this type of investment. We must not go back to the 1980s and 1990s when schools were starved of cash."
