The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment came in for special praise when Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, tabled a parliamentary motion to draw attention to the Regiment’s involvement in Iraq.

Tabled by Edward Davey with cross-party support, the Motion ‘applauds the professionalism and courage’ of all troops and recognises the particular role played by the PWRR. It furthermore calls on MPs with constituents in the Regiment, which draws its members from Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Middlesex, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, to raise awareness of the regiment and its achievements.

Through tabling the motion Edward Davey also hoped to highlight the work of other army organisations that draw their numbers from Kingston and the surrounding area.

Commenting, Edward Davey MP said,

"I tabled this motion to highlight the incredible work the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment have done, not just in Iraq but in Afghanistan and Kosovo as well.

"Christmas and New Year are times of reflection and for being with one’s family. Through tabling this motion I wanted to remind people of the huge sacrifice these men and women have made in leaving their families to go to Iraq and fight for their country.

"This motion is not just to draw attention to the incredible achievements of the PWRR, but also to raise awareness of other local squadrons and local sacrifices. A squadron of the Royal Army Medical Corps shares barracks with a detachment of the 83 (London) Signal Squadron on the Portsmouth Road. Both have seen action in Iraq. It is important to show our appreciation of the sacrifices that all of Surrey’s sons and daughters have made on the Government’s behalf.

"With the Second Battalion of PWRR set to go out to Iraq now it is the New Year, it is clear that the Regiment’s work is far from over. It is up to us to support them in their work."
