MRSA at Kingston
Hospital
13.03.06
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and
Surbiton, has expressed his concern about new statistics which show
MRSA cases rising at Kingston Hospital for the period April to
September 2005.
Edward Davey has been raising issues of cleanliness with senior
managers at the hospital for over 3 years and helped out in the
hospital’s campaigns to raise staff awareness of the need to wash hands
properly, and is therefore “extremely disappointed” at the lack of
progress last year. Commenting he said:
“I am concerned that for the first six months last year, Kingston
Hospital saw this significant deterioration. I know there has been a
lot of hard work to tackle MRSA at the hospital, but that simply makes
these figures even more disappointing.
“I have already raised my concerns with the hospital, and they tell me
that the most up-to-date figures show a significant reduction. While
that is welcome, the facts are that this problem should not have got
out of hand last year.
“When people go to their local hospital, they want to get better, not
catch infections. This must be seen as a wake up call to the Kingston
team: they should review absolutely everything they are doing to combat
MRSA and bring in the best practice from the best performing hospitals.
A step change must now be made.”
