The New Ming Dynasty
06.04.06
Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP
for Kingston and
Surbiton, expressed his delight at the election of Sir Menzies Campbell
MP as
the new leader of the Liberal Democrats.
Sir
Ming won by over
8,000 votes in a ballot of Party members. The turnout was 72 %, up 10 %
on the
last leadership election in 1999.
Edward Davey, who had
been publicly backing Ming Campbell from the start, said
“This is fantastic news both for
Ming and for the Liberal
Democrat Party.
“He won by a
comfortable margin and obviously has the backing of the wider Party as
well as
the overwhelming support of MPs.
“He has the gravitas
and experience that will make him a serious contender against the young
Mr
Cameron in the Conservative Party.
“I am looking forward to helping
Ming fight for a greener,
fairer, decent Britain
at peace with itself at home and admired abroad.”
