Dentistry Questions

06.04.06

Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, has pressed the Government over the chaotic state of NHS dentistry.

By imposing new contracts on NHS dentists, the Government is forcing dentists to increase their NHS commitments whilst accepting significant decreases in funding.

Edward Davey said,

“This is deeply worrying. I have already been inundated with letters from constituents telling me that they are already feeling the effects. Some have been told that their dentists can’t treat their children on the NHS any more.

“We already have a real problem with children’s tooth decay in this country. Making it more difficult for children to see a dentist is going to make this problem far, far worse.

“I’ve asked these questions to establish just how bad the problem is and what the Government proposes to do about it. They must rethink this disastrous contract if they are serious about looking after our children’s health.

“This is a critical moment for dentistry.  The Government must make plans to ensure that dentists are happy with the new contract and will stay in the NHS, so that everyone can register with an NHS dentist.”
