Davey Down With the Kids

30.10.06

Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton, met with young people to discuss national and local issues as part of the Urban Nights scheme run by Kingston’s Oxygen.

As a nation we are besieged by stories of hooded youths roaming the streets causing mayhem and destruction.  That is why Richard James director of Christian Youthwork Project Oxygen runs Urban Nights where every Thursday evening young people in New Malden, who would normally have no other place to go, can come to Christchurch Parish rooms to chat about there week. Edward Davey, Liberal Democrat MP for Kingston and Surbiton was invited by the young people to come and have a chat about the issues and how they feel they are viewed by society.

Edward Davey said,

“I was pleasantly surprised that young people actually wanted to chat to their local MP.  The view nowadays is that politics and politicians are boring, especially to young people.  I was really looking forward to getting the chance to chat about issues that they where concerned about and they certainly, didn’t disappoint!

“The range of topics and questions asked was extensive, I had a marvelous time.  I even think that some of the young people may have enjoyed it!”

“Urban Nights project is a great way of encouraging young people rather than continually seeing young people as a problem.”
