Liberal Democrats Win Access Grant for Chessington South Station

After years of Campaigning for greater accessibility at local railway stations Edward Davey MP and Liberal Democrat Councillors, were delighted that the Government has finally listened and awarded Chessington South Station a grant to update facilities to be more accessible for disabled passengers.

The Department of Transport has allocated a grant of £112,500 from the Access for All Fund, which will provide funding to improve access for disabled passengers to the ticket office, toilets and to the platform via a ramp at Chessington South Station. Under this scheme, funding to provide lifts at Kingston Station and a ramp for Norbiton Station during 2007 has also been confirmed.

Following the news that Chessington South had successfully secured the grant, Edward Davey MP said,

Local Stations were not designed to take into account the accessibility requirements of disabled passengers which has led to many being unable to use the stations.

“The improvements to the station will not just help local residents but also the wider community, from employees on the industrial estate, to Chessington College Students not to mention visitors to Chessington World.

“Although long over due, I am delighted that finally funding has been made available to address the accessibility issues at Chessington South Station.”

“I will be writing to the Minister in charge of the Access for All fund, to draw attention to updating of facilities needed at Surbiton Station.”
