Immigration
: Government must not shirk education and training -
Davey
Edward Davey, local
Liberal Democrat MP, commenting on the calls by Barbara
Roche for the need to relax immigrations controls to fill
the British skills gap, said:
"We must
address the desperate skills shortage, but relaxing
immigration controls must be approached cautiously.
"There's no doubt that immigrants can bring
much-needed skills. Kingston has certainly benefited
hugely from the many professional and business people who
have settled here from other countries. Kingston
Hospital is already dependant on nurses from the
Philippines and other countries.
"But the Government must face up to the challenge of
training and education locally rather than simply
poaching skilled people from the world's poorer
countries."
