"More officers and better technology can beat crime"
Davey backs CCTV bids for the Alpha Road Estate, Tolworth Broadway and his 'Safer Stations Initiative.'
Minister acts on Davey's proposal for reporting crimes via the Internet

Continuing his anti-crime campaign, local MP, Edward Davey, has written to Jack Straw to back Kingston Council's bid for funding towards new cameras in Tolworth Broadway, the Alpha Road Estate and a link between the Council and SWT's CCTV control rooms.

In his letter, Edward Davey argues that the "need for these projects cannot be stressed too highly"..  Arguing for the CCTV bids, Mr. Davey wrote how his constituency work had convinced him of the urgent need for these projects. He told the Home Secretary that:

"There is a real community resolve to tackle the problem, with local residents, local businesses and the police working together, but they need external support."

"There is no doubt that CCTV will not only reduce crime statistics, but it will reduce many more crimes that aren't reported."

In relation to the bid supporting his 'Safer Stations Initiative', Mr. Davey said:

"To their credit, all the partner agencies involved in my 'Safer Stations Initiative' have put in a lot of hard work and real improvements have been made."

"The proposed link up between Kingston Council and SWT's CCTV control rooms is a natural progression which should improve passenger and local residents' safety."

Commenting on the Government's response to his suggestion for reporting crimes via the Internet, Edward Davey said:

"I was pleased that the Minister responded so positively to my suggestion."

"It's a fact that the police are stretched to breaking point and making best use of new technology is imperative. As Sir John Stevens warned, the cavalry are taking some time to arrive to re-inforce our beat officers. Officers must be allowed to spend their time fighting crime not simply
form filling and shuffling papers."
