MP calls for an urgent decision on filter beds inquiry
The Planning Inquiry over
Surbiton's Filter Beds should not be re-opened, according
to local MP Edward Davey.
This week he released the letter he wrote back in
Mid-January to the central Government Minister and
department dealing with the issue, following suggestions
in early January from Whitehall the Inquiry should be
re-opened.
Mr Davey has campaigned for over three years against the
proposed development by Thames Water on Surbiton's
riverbank and has worked every step of the way with local
residents and Kingston Council. A response to his latest
initiative is expected within days.
Commenting on the potential re-opening of the enquiry,
Edward said,
"We were all
disappointed that Thames Water's latest trick may delay
the final decision of this important Inquiry, but I am
confident we will still eventually win "
"There is no further substantial evidence that the
company can give in support of their plans so I would be
very surprised if the Planning Inspectorate or Ministers
change their minds at this late stage."
"I have been in touch with the Government Office of
London several times since they proposed re-opening the
Inquiry in early January, so they are clear about the
opposition from local residents to these plans. I've
demanded detailed answers to a number of key questions,
such as why the Government has even considered re-opening
the Inquiry, and what exactly the remit of any new
Inquiry could be. Taxpayers' money is being wasted by
Thames Water's planning games."
Commenting on local
Tory councillors recent backing to the campaign, Edward
added,
"I am
delighted that Tory councillors have finally decided to
join the campaign - although slightly surprised that it's
taken them three weeks to realise the Inquiry might be
re-opened. "I hope they will now work with me and
local residents who have been fighting with me to protect
this site for the past three and a half years."
