4th Annual Report

This is my fourth report as your MP. I hope you find it useful and interesting.

After being elected in ‘97, I wanted to build closer links with local people than previous MPs had managed to achieve. My first 3 annual reports were part of that process and proved popular. I hope you like this year’s new design.

As before, this report has been paid for and delivered by local residents who support my work. So not a penny of taxpayers’ money has been used. I am grateful to all who helped make the report possible.

Last year my Commons work involved a range of national and local campaigns. These included pushing for a decent pension rise and speaking up for Kingston on issues like our need for extra police and better school funding. My work on the Treasury Committee covered enquiries into banking services, the Equitable Life fiasco and the internal workings of the Treasury itself.

My constituency work continued apace. Having 8 advice sessions a month and an e-mail address has added greatly to the number of local people able to contact me. So if you feel I can be of service to you or a local group, do please get in touch with me.

Edward Davey has a constituency office in Surbiton where he holds regular surgeries for local people.

Edward Davey is campaigning at Westminster against poor state pensions, with the support of local pensioners.

Edward Davey has set out his ideas for Parliamentary budget reforms to get better value for the taxpayer. In "Making MPs Work for Our Money" Edward proposes changes to make MPs focus on reducing waste and improving services.

Health Campaigns
Edward Davey MP is campaigning hard for a better health service in Kingston and Surbiton. A major success is the new Accident and Emergency Unit now being built at Kingston Hospital. His latest NHS campaigns are to cut waiting times, improve facilities for local GPs and better transport links to local hospitals.

Working for you, all year round...
Listening to local pensioners Edward visiting a local nursing home to hear people’s views. In Parliament, he is pushing for the Royal Commission’s proposals on paying for long term care of the elderly.	Success on road safety Edward celebrates with residents as new figures prove the 50 m.p.h. A3 speed limit he won has saved lives and new service road safety barriers are to be installed
Visiting schools Edward Davey at a local play school. He is campaigning nationally for better nursery provision and more investment in schools.	In Parliament... I spoke at least once a week on average, on constituency matters, in committee or in my role as Lib Dem Spokesman on Treasury and London. The Speaker granted me special debates on: • Low income pensioners • Moor Lane School, Chessington, & Ofsted • Inflation (Indices & Statistical Errors) Questions I asked included: • opposing new student fees (to Prime Minister) • support for new anti-graffiti measures • backing extended use of email by police Committees I served on included: • Treasury Select Committe • Finance Bill Standing Committee • Tax Simplification Committee (Joint Houses)
Backing Kingston’s new theatre Edward visiting the Charter Quay development and the site of Kingston’s new theatre.	Campaigning on crime Edward welcomes a first arrival from the Metropolitan Police Dog Unit, now based at New Malden Police Station. He is backing a volunteer scheme for the front desk as the next step towards full re-opening.
Votes & Motions My voting record for the last full session of Parliament was 75% - in the top third of MPs and better than all Conservative MPs - bar one. I backed many motions, including support for: • Free personal care for the elderly • The right to have UK flags on registration plates • Equal treatment for widows and widowers Visit my Work in Parliament page for more information.	International campaigns Edward Davey campaigning locally with Amnesty International. He also backed the Jubilee 2000 campaign for debt relief in third world countries.
Campaigning for our area Edward launching the ‘Clean-sweep’ campaign to clean up our Borough and get rid of the litter, graffiti and abandoned cars.
