Let me bank via my local Post Office!

A key Lib Dem achievement in the Coalition has been securing the future of Britain’s post office network. Business Secretary, Vince Cable, working with Postal Affairs Minister, Edward Davey, and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, secured funding of £1.34 billion for Britain’s post offices and a Government commitment that there will be no programme of post office closures under this Coalition.

This is a major boost to the network, after years of cuts under Labour, who closed over 7,000 post offices.

"This huge investment gives us the chance to do what successive Governments have failed to do - make the Post Office fit for purpose for local communities, in the age of email and the internet," said Edward Davey.

"Rather than wasting taxpayers money on closing post offices like Labour did, we will be investing to cut queues and facilitate longer opening hours. We want the Post Office to be the “Front Office for Government”, offering more services, not fewer."

....but you can still campaign on Post Offices!

We welcome the fact that 80% of bank current accounts can now be accessed at your local post office, following RBS's decision to follow some other banks in providing this service. However, we are alarmed that customers of Santander and HSBC are still not given this opportunity and we call on the Chief Executives of Santander and HSBC to follow the lead of other banks and conclude an agreement with Post Office Limited within the next six months.

Campaigners - you can download a pdf of the Focus on Post Offices leaflet, which includes a template motion to Council and a paper petition. Completed petition forms should be posted to Kingston and Surbiton Liberal Democrats, Freepost NAT 13839, Surbiton KT5 8BR.
